I am thrilled to announce that yesterday afternoon, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island (HHCRI) and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University signed an affiliation agreement that establishes HHCRI as the major teaching affiliate for hospice and palliative medicine for the school.
Not only will this new affiliation help educate more medical students about end-of-life care, but it also highlights the growing emergence of hospice and palliative care into mainstream medicine. It also represents the kind of innovative, visionary thinking and the spirit of collaboration that has been a mainstay in both organizations from our early beginnings.
Both HHCRI and the Warren Alpert Medical School have been leaders in health care and the Rhode Island community for decades. Now we are putting our resources together to help train future doctors and future medical professionals about the importance and best practices of hospice and palliative care. Together, we will help give them the techniques and skills needed to provide patients and their families with the comfort, dignity, and respect they deserve in their final days.
I am also happy to report that our own, Edward W. Martin, MD, MPH, who is the Chief Medical Officer for HHCRI, and a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School will oversee the clinical training of medical students and doctors at HHCRI’s Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center located in Providence. Dr. Martin has an academic appointment with Brown and was recently recognized by the Alpert Medical School with their Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award.
This is an exciting announcement for both organizations, and we look forward to sharing more about the program in the months ahead.

Alex and Ani, Inc Steps Up to Help HHCRI
The phoenix is the perfect symbol to help inspire and remember the loved ones we have cared for over the past four decades. As many know, this mythical creature is known to rise from its ashes in regeneration. With strong wings to soar to great heights, and it represents a new life filled with opportunity. A sign of divinity and immortality, it also reminds us that the spirits of our loved ones can remain in our hearts forever.
Millions of individuals have come to recognize the power and beauty of Alex and Ani’s creations and the positive energy that comes with wearing them. Our work also empowers the individuals and families we help, as we allow them to face their final days with dignity and comfort. Together this new partnership will enlighten others to our shared missions.
We thank them deeply for this unique gesture, and look forward to seeing so many people who recognize the importance and strength of our organization wearing this charm.
